Endings Matter: Game of Thrones
(this column contains spoilers)
How things end matters. We know this, yet many, many things end badly. Almost everything leaves us unsatisfied. The truly great book or piece of entertainment is very rare. Look no further than Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones has taken the culture by storm. In season 1, the king dies, and the over the course of the 8 seasons of the show, you watch as different people vie for the crown. This vying is: A Game of Thrones. It’s so good. From across the sea, a young gal named Daenerys Targaryen starts with nothing. She’s literally naked in the first episode, and she rises up with the greatest army around - including the possession of three dragons. You have the power in the major city, Kings landing, with the Lanisters, as well as other people.
Game of Thrones was one of the best television shows of all time…until the end. It produced some of the best single hours of tv. But now, after the abysmal last season, I will never recommend the show to anyone. How could I with that awful ending? For 8 years you’ve been following the journey of a character, and then over the course of a summer, she’s somehow bad? And the theme of the entire show - Winter is Coming, and the White Walkers is handled over the course of a single episode. They' seem like one of the easiest villians of all times. How the f did they kill a dragon? Speaking of dragons, they’re talked about as being the best fighters of all time, and yet Yurion can kill one with a spear in an instant?
HBO, you f’ed up with Game of Thrones.
