How the Book Came About
I’ve always preferred working out in the afternoon…
I like to start the day with something intellectual, use my brain for a while, and then when words and thoughts turn to mush, get a workout in. On those occasions, my body often starts out stiff but after a few reps or the first mile, I start to think more clearly.
Afternoon is also the time of day I typically hit a point where I feel like everything I’ve worked on sucks. I’ve learned, thouhg, through trial and error that this just means it’s time to get moving. Sometimes this movement is with music or a podcast, sometimes it’s in silence while listening to The Divine.
One day, stuck and looking for inspiration, I put on a podcast I like (The RobCast - by Rob Bell), which was having a milestone episode. In it, the host read about who and where and how listeners take in his content. One of the listeners said she’s trying to change the way books get to the world.
Something about the description - the passion, ambition, goal of getting good books to good readers in a new way - spoke to me. So, I made a phone note of Bethany Marshall, and looked her up.
Her company, Publishizer is really cool. It’s working to connect authors with publishers using the best modern tools technology and printing has to offer, while lowering overhead, and doing book campaigns.
We started talking, and a few months later a contract for Reclaiming the Narrative was signed. The book is now in the final editing stages, and you can check out the campaign here:
Next time: It was so awesome, and such a cool experience because before that, it had been a bunch of no’s and a whole lot of queries.
